A major development has emerged in the fake passport case involving Congress leader Pawan Khera after his marathon interrogation by the Guwahati Police Crime Branch. The case was filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sources now indicate that Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi could also come under the scanner as the investigation moves forward.
Pawan Khera was summoned by the Assam Police Crime Branch in Guwahati and was questioned for two consecutive days on Wednesday and Thursday. The interrogation reportedly lasted several hours and focused on the allegations linked to fake passports and forged documents connected to Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.
According to sources, a significant revelation came out during the questioning. Khera allegedly named a specific individual during the interrogation. Investigators believe that this person had prepared fake passports using false details in the name of Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. These documents were then allegedly handed over to Gaurav Gogoi.
Sources further claimed that Gogoi later submitted these documents to the Congress high command. It is alleged that the conspiracy connected to the case was planned after these documents were circulated within party circles. Following Khera’s statements, investigators are now likely to examine Gogoi’s possible role in the matter.
The Crime Branch had earlier registered a case of forgery and criminal conspiracy against Pawan Khera based on a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. The complaint accused Khera of spreading fabricated documents and making false allegations against her. Although Khera later secured anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court, the court directed him to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
The controversy began after Khera publicly alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma possessed citizenship and active passports from three countries — the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. He had also claimed that she owned properties in Dubai and the United States. These allegations triggered a major political controversy and led to sharp reactions from both the ruling BJP and the Congress.
Rejecting all the accusations, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma strongly denied the claims and described the documents circulated by the Congress leader as fake. She said the papers had been created through digital manipulation and demanded strict legal action against those responsible for spreading the claims.
Calling the allegations false, Sharma stated that the documents were “completely fake” and claimed they had been created using digital manipulation tools. She also demanded strict legal action against those responsible for spreading what she described as false and fabricated claims.
After filing the FIR, Sharma maintained that every allegation made against her was baseless. She expressed confidence in the Assam Police investigation and said she believed the guilty would be identified through a fair probe. The investigation is now expected to intensify as the Crime Branch studies the statements made during Khera’s questioning and examines the alleged links that have surfaced during the inquiry.
