Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Karimganj district would be renamed Sribhumi, drawing inspiration from Rabindranath Tagore’s description of the region. The decision, approved by the Assam Cabinet, aims to celebrate Tagore’s legacy while reflecting the aspirations and cultural identity of the people of the district.
Explaining the significance of the name, the Chief Minister stated that “Sribhumi” translates to “the land of Goddess Lakshmi.” Sharing the announcement on X, he wrote, “Over 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern-day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’ — the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people.”
Tagore’s reference to Karimganj as Sribhumi in his writings has long resonated with the local population, making this renaming a fulfillment of a long-standing demand. The Chief Minister emphasised that the new name embodies the region’s cultural and spiritual essence while paying homage to one of India’s greatest literary icons.
A photograph accompanying Sarma’s post further highlighted the significance of the decision, describing it as a step that aligns with the people’s expectations and aspirations. The move is part of Assam’s broader effort to honour cultural and historical figures who have contributed to the state’s heritage.
Supporters of the decision see it as a meaningful tribute to Tagore’s enduring influence and a recognition of the district’s historical identity. Once implemented, the renaming of Karimganj to Sribhumi will stand as a testament to Assam’s rich cultural legacy and its deep respect for India’s literary greats.
