Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that the state's cancer care model is gaining recognition nationwide. Sarma made these remarks while inaugurating a cancer care unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
Additionally, he reaffirmed the government's dedication to the development of Barak Valley, addressing allegations of neglect toward the region. Sarma's statements underscored the administration's focus on healthcare advancements and regional development initiatives.
"We have inaugurated the cancer care unit, which is part of the network of 17 hospitals in the state under a joint initiative of the state government and Tata Trusts," he stated.
Sarma explained that three categories of cancer care units are being established in government-run hospitals under the project, with the one at SMCH falling into category 2. This category will offer patients comprehensive care, he elaborated.
"The lone category 1 facility, which will be the apex cancer care hospital, is being opened at Guwahati," stated the chief minister. He further disclosed that the state government's share in the project amounts to Rs 2,460 crore, with Tata Trusts contributing Rs 1,180 crore, the government of India allocating Rs 180 crore, and over Rs 80 crore raised through donations.
"The Assam Cancer Care Foundation has been established to oversee the management of these units," declared the CM. He emphasized that the foundation would be accountable for the operation of the units, and in the event of any revenue deficit at the end of the year, the state government would step in to bridge the gap.
Additionally, he noted that ten cancer care centres are already operational, having provided treatment to over 2.15 lakh patients. Sarma declared, "Assam is setting the standard for the nation to emulate. We are considering enhancing this project to establish Assam as a key state in cancer care."
Sarma reiterated the state government's dedication to the advancement of the Barak Valley. "Despite some individuals in the Barak Valley spreading misinformation that the state government neglects this region, initiatives like this cancer care unit demonstrate our commitment and active support for the development of the Barak Valley," Sarma stated.
