Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a ₹500 crore defamation case against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and senior Congress leaders Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel. The case was filed after the leaders allegedly made what Sarma described as “false, malicious and defamatory allegations” against him during a press conference.
The Chief Minister announced the move through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he stated that he has taken legal action against the Congress leaders for damaging his image and reputation through public statements.
In his post, Sarma said, “Today, I have filed a defamation case seeking ₹500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference.”
The Assam CM further clarified that he is not limiting the matter only to a civil case. He has also decided to proceed legally through both civil and criminal defamation measures.
He wrote, “I am initiating civil and criminal defamation proceedings on 9 February 2026 against @JitendraSAlwar, @bhupeshbaghel, @GauravGogoiAsm and @DsaikiaOfficial for making false, malicious and defamatory statements against me in today’s press conference.”
Sarma strongly criticised the Congress leaders and accused them of using propaganda and slander as political tools. In the same statement, he said he would not be pressured or intimidated by such tactics.
He wrote, “I will not be intimidated by propaganda, coordinated slander, or political theatrics of so-called slaves of the Gandhi family.”
The Chief Minister also challenged the Congress leaders to prove their allegations in court. He stated that if they truly have evidence, they should present it legally rather than spreading accusations publicly.
Sarma said, “If they have even an ounce of courage or evidence, let them prove every allegation before a court of law.”
He further added that the time for making allegations and escaping responsibility is over. Sarma said, “The era of hit-and-run politics is over.”
The development marks a major escalation in the political clash between the ruling leadership in Assam and the opposition Congress party. The legal case worth ₹500 crore is expected to draw further attention in the coming days.
As per the report, there has been no immediate response from Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Jitendra Singh, or Bhupesh Baghel after Sarma’s announcement.
The defamation case filed by the Assam Chief Minister highlights rising political tensions and signals that Sarma intends to pursue legal action against those who, according to him, make baseless allegations against him in public forums.
