Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially unveiled India's maiden 3D-printed post office edifice in Bengaluru. The inauguration ceremony of this innovative 1,000 square feet post office structure took place in the vicinity of Cambridge Layout, near Ulsoor Bazaar.
As informed by postal authorities, the construction of this cutting-edge building was skillfully executed by Larsen & Toubro Limited. Meanwhile, the technical expertise and guidance were contributed by the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. This collaborative endeavor sets a remarkable precedent in the realm of modern architectural advancements.
“This city always presents a new picture of India. The new picture that you saw today in terms of this 3D-printed post office building, that’s the spirit of India,” Vaishnaw, who holds the railways, communications, electronics and IT portfolios, said at the event.
“The spirit of development, the spirit of developing our own technology, the spirit of doing something which was considered impossible in the earlier times. That’s the defining feature of these times,” he added.
According to postal officials, construction work commenced in April and reached completion within a remarkably brief span of 45 days. This starkly contrasts with the conventional method, which typically requires approximately six to eight months for the same task. The considerable reduction in both cost and time positions the 3D-concrete printing technology as a practical and effective alternative to traditional building processes.
“Having a 3D-printed concrete building constructed on-site is a great initiative. This is a technology demonstrator. IIT-Madras has done fabulous work on this. When this technology will become mainstream, we will see more such initiatives taking this technology forward,” he said.
The Union minister also said that nobody had ever thought that India would be developing its own 4G and 5G technology. “Nobody ever thought that India would manufacture its complex telecom equipment,” he said.
In a recent update shared on 'X', formerly referred to as Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that the 3D-printed post office stands as a testament to the innovation and progress of the nation. He further noted that this landmark achievement embodies the essence of a self-reliant India.
“Every Indian would be proud to see India’s first 3D printed Post Office at Cambridge Layout, Bengaluru. A testament to our nation’s innovation and progress, it also embodies the spirit of a self-reliant India. Compliments to those who have worked hard in ensuring the Post Office’s completion,” he said.
