Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, Arvind Kejriwal, is expected to resign today after a meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. This move will pave the way for AAP leader Atishi to assume the role of Delhi's Chief Minister. The decision was made earlier today at a meeting of AAP leaders.
Atishi, 43, currently holds significant portfolios in the Delhi government, including education and the Public Works Department (PWD). Her rise to the top position comes amidst a reshuffle in AAP's leadership following legal issues involving senior leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain. Both Sisodia and Jain had resigned after being arrested, leaving a leadership gap within the party.
A Rhodes Scholar and Oxford University alumna, Atishi is well-known for her contributions to public service, particularly in the field of education. She played a central role in AAP's initiatives to reform Delhi's government schools, a key element of Kejriwal's administration. An MLA from Kalkaji, she joined the Delhi cabinet in March 2023 following Sisodia's resignation over his alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor policy case. Since then, she has been instrumental in overseeing key government projects.
Atishi’s public profile rose significantly during Kejriwal and Sisodia's legal battles, for frequently representing the party in public. During the 2023 Independence Day celebrations, she was selected to hoist the national flag at the Delhi government’s event while Kejriwal faced legal issues. However, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena halted those plans.
Before joining AAP, Atishi worked with grassroots organisations and quickly ascended through the party’s ranks. She earned national recognition for her work in education reform and involvement in addressing critical issues like Delhi’s water crisis and women's safety.
