The National Socialist Council of Taniland (NSCT), a dormant group that had not been active for more than ten years, has reappeared with a series of demands intended to change Arunachal Pradesh's policies and government. Due to the group's threats, the state is experiencing instability and turmoil. On December 23, 2024, the NCST issued a statement in line with the Christmas celebrations, presenting a list of six demands. They warned the Arunachal Pradesh Government to address these issues within a set timeframe or face possible consequences.
The outfit, NSCT, has put forward a set of demands, starting with the immediate cancellation of all Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs) and Understandings (MoUs) signed with hydroelectric power companies for constructing mega dams. Citing UN resolutions against such projects, the group warned against proceeding without public consensus and stakeholder approval. Additionally, they called for the revocation of Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) certificates issued to non-indigenous individuals or their descendants and demanded the departure of non-indigenous businessmen and political figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and Speaker Tesam Pownte Tutsa, from the state within three months.
NSCT also urged the government to expedite the resolution of disputes related to the McMahon Line and to reclaim the territory lost due to earlier treaties. The group criticised the delays in resolving boundary disputes with Assam, threatening direct intervention if no progress is made. Furthermore, they demanded that Chakma and Hajong refugees, who were granted refuge in Arunachal Pradesh by the Indian government, be relocated to border areas, emphasising their temporary settlement status.
In a more internal matter, NSCT announced the termination of all former cadres of the National Liberation Council of Taniland (NLCT), disassociating them from the outfit. The group also named Deputy CM Chowna Mein and Speaker Tesam Pownte Tutsa as "outsiders," calling for their immediate resignations due to their failure to represent the indigenous interests of the state. NSCT gave the state government three months to fulfil its demands, warning that failure to comply would lead to necessary actions to enforce its vision for the state's future.
