The Arunachal Pradesh government has announced its decision of developing three model villages along the Indo-Tibet border.
The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein while presenting the 2021-22 Budget in the state assembly on Wednesday.
The decision comes as a bid to significantly restrict cross-border misdemeanors and develop the border areas.
"I am happy to announce a major initiative to develop three model villages on a pilot basis in the Indo-Tibet China border areas – one each in the Eastern, Central and one Western part of the state," Deputy CM Mein said in his budget presentation.
Stating that the Border Guarding forces would be incorporated for designing and implementing the scheme, the CM further added, "It is of critical importance to develop the areas near the international border so as the border populace can act as a check against any foreign misadventure."
According to reports, Rs 30 crore pilot project for developing three model villages along the border is contemplated as a part of the Rs 131 crore diverse projects proposed in the state budget for 2021-22.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the past years, we have witnessed an unprecedented focus on border area infrastructure development, including road connectivity. The comprehensive development of border villages would be continued with good road connectivity, power, water supply, health, and education,” the Deputy CM elucidated.
A Financial Express report also stated the state government's proposal to take up the construction of a two-lane East-West Industrial Corridor Highway project with the central government. It is a 966 km long highway project which will be passing through nine districts of the state.
CM Khandu stated that the 545.45 km long phase-I starts from Pasighat and ends at Bhairabkund, while 147.13 km phase-II starts from Kanubari in Longding district and ends at Tirap Gate in the district of Manmao.
In the budget for the next fiscal (2021-22), the government proposed Rs 38 crore for the department of indigenous affairs for preserving the indigenous way of life, Rs 4 crore for the preservation of indigenous heritage centres in a phased manner and Rs 40 crore for the construction of tribal cultural centres, a Northeast Now report stated.
Alongside the model villages project, the State Government also proposed to allocate Rs 5 crore for the repair of foot suspension bridges in border areas used by the border securing forces for patrolling.
The Pema Khandu-led state governments also proposed to launch a border village illumination program to construct small and micro hydels in remote border areas which can be used in local grid or off-grid mode.
In addition to these upcoming development projects in the state, the central government has approved the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for developing highways along the frontiers.
