Arunachal Pradesh has stepped up security in the Siang Valley amid fears of fresh protests against the proposed 11,200 MW Siang hydropower project. Police have called in two companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) from Navi Mumbai to Pasighat as reinforcements.
Several Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft have landed at Pasighat airport, carrying RAF personnel and other security forces. Police sources said several RAF companies were already deployed in Siang and Upper Siang.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) companies from Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Nagaon and Nalbari in Assam have also been sent to the region. A total of 34 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are deployed in Siang, including women RAF personnel, to deal with law and order violations.
Protests against the proposed dam in East Siang district turned violent on October 23. Protesters set fire to NHPC's local office and police vehicles. Authorities also reported arson at several locations and vandalism at the homes of MLAs. Officials have imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Pasighat, Mebo and Ruksin.
Arunachal Pradesh Police have registered several cases linked to last week's violence in Pasighat. Police sources said authorities had arrested 21 people and detained eight others.
Meanwhile, tensions have spread to Upper Subansiri district over another proposed hydropower project. A 12-hour district-wide bandh called by the Tagin Students' Union turned tense in Daporijo, the district headquarters.
Vehicles were set on fire on the streets, triggering heated arguments between protesters and police. The union called the shutdown over an alleged attempt by police to detain its president after searching his residence on Saturday night.
The students' body is also demanding the cancellation of the proposed 1,600 MW Upper Subansiri Hydroelectric Project.
