Article 355 imposed, Union Government takes reins of Manipur Security

On Wednesday, the Union government invoked Article 355 of the constitution and took control of the entire security of the state, with homes burning, churches attacked, and thousands of people being displaced.
Internet and broadband services were completely shut down for five days, shoot at the sight orders were issued by the governor. The law and order of the state are now controlled by the army and the paramilitary forces.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that “lives had been lost". The state government has not given details of the number of deaths and injuries so far. The former CRPF Director General of Police, Kuldeep Singh said that he was appointed as the security advisor to the Manipur Government.
Around 1075 personnel of the Rapid Action Force has been deployed in Manipur in order to bring the situation under control.
On Wednesday, thousands of tribals took out the solidarity march in the 10 hill districts of the state where most of the tribal population resides and opposed the grant that is scheduled tribe status for the Meitei community which makes up around 53% of Manipur’s population.
The violence in the state is the result of the Tribal Solidarity March against the ST demand of the Meitei Community of Manipur conducted in the hill districts of the Manipur state. The tribal solidarity March was also conducted by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur in all the tribal-inhabited hill districts of the state.
