The disclosure of conspiracy revealed in the CBI’s remand letter has reignited the rape-murder case that took place at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Unfolding the conspiracy, the letter revealed that the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, did not allow for the filing of an FIR. Revealing further, another remand letter marked that the arrested officer in charge of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, was also involved in attempting to divert the investigation in the case.
Mondal was taken into custody by the CBI on Saturday following his alleged involvement in the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor. He was detained following his failure to give satisfactory answers to CBI officers. The CBI also questioned him later on at the CGO Complex in Kolkata for several hours. The CBI has accused Mondal of destroying evidence and also delaying the FIR, according to an officer who told PTI.
The remand letter said, “Abhijit Mondal hatched a criminal conspiracy with other probable accused person, in screening Sanjoy Roy (the main accused) and others, in attempting to divert the direction of the investigation.” The letter also added, “Mondal reached the scene of the crime at 11 am, an hour after receiving information about the crime, and deliberately registered a case of unnatural death, thus mentioning incorrect facts intentionally.”
The CBI further claimed that Mondal was working in association with the hospital's management. “Mondal failed to secure the scene of the crime, thereby trying to protect Sanjoy Roy. His actions resulted in damage to vital information. He caused a deliberate delay in registering the FIR even after he had received information about the incident at 10.03 am on August 9. The FIR was only registered at 11.30 pm the same day, even after a go-ahead from the family at 7.30 pm. Mondal did not videograph the process of sealing the evidence and biological samples, as mandated by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). He allowed a rushed-up cremation of the doctor, even as the family demanded a second autopsy,” the remand letter added.
“Abhijit Mondal caused a delay of two days, in securing the clothes of the Sanjoy Roy, that he wore on the day of the crime,” said the letter.
According to the note, the CBI informed the court that Sandip Ghosh was attempting to mislead the investigators on crucial issues, as evidenced by the CFSL report from the polygraph test. The letter said, “Ghosh did not intend to register an FIR in the case, even after being in consultation with an advocate.” The letter further added, “Even after he received information about the incident at 9.58 am on August 9, he did not reach the hospital immediately. He did not submit a murder complaint, which was eventually submitted by the vice-principal, who floated a theory of suicide by the doctor.” The remand letter also stated, “Sandip Ghosh was in touch with Mondal since 10.03 am. However, he tried to downplay the incident, thus leading to the destruction of evidence.
