Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani on November 4 announced a two-year extension in the service tenure of 75 per cent of Agniveers who do not qualify for regular enrolment after completing their initial four years. This will increase their total service period to six years. They will then get another opportunity to join the regular forces, subject to performance reviews and selection criteria.
Speaking at a press conference, Gen Subramani said the first batch of Agniveers was nearing the end of its four-year tenure. He added that feedback on their performance had been positive. The armed forces had recommended the extension, which the Cabinet has approved.
The CDS said performance and achievements would play a key role in deciding the future of Agniveers. Those who complete the additional two years will undergo another assessment for possible enrolment into the regular forces.
Responding to questions about the future of the Agniveer scheme, he said its implementation would follow the prescribed rules. He also indicated that the arrangements were not "set in stone" and could be reviewed based on experience.
Gen Subramani said the armed forces were creating opportunities for Agniveers across different branches. Their training and assessment would cover physical fitness, adaptability, technological knowledge and the ability to handle different responsibilities.
The CDS said Agniveer training goes beyond physical fitness. It also focuses on moral values, technical knowledge and skill development. Personnel will also get opportunities to improve their educational qualifications, including moving from Class 10 to Class 12 and from Class 12 to graduation.
The interaction also covered salaries, promotions and service conditions. The figures mentioned included Rs 43,500 in the first year and Rs 47,000 in the second year. The existing Seva Nidhi package will continue. Applicable guidelines will determine further details on salaries and roles during the extended service period.
Launched in June 2022, the Agnipath scheme recruits young personnel into the Army, Navy and Air Force for an initial four-year period.
Under the original provisions, the armed forces could select up to 25 per cent of each batch for permanent enrolment. The selection depends on performance, organisational requirements and other prescribed criteria. Those not selected must leave service after four years and receive a one-time Seva Nidhi package. They also receive skill certificates to support their employment prospects outside the armed forces.
The Navy's first batch will complete its tenure on November 21, followed by the Air Force on December 21 and the Army on December 31. More than 18,000 personnel from the first batch are expected to complete their four-year service by the end of 2026.
