Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday issued a strong message to Pakistan over terrorism and cross-border activities against India. Speaking at an interactive session hosted by ‘Uniform Unveiled’ at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi, General Dwivedi said Pakistan would have to face serious consequences if it continued to support terrorism against India.
During the session, the Army chief was asked how the Indian Army would respond if a situation similar to the one that led to Operation Sindoor emerged again. Replying to the question, General Dwivedi repeated India’s clear stand on terrorism and Pakistan’s role in supporting terror groups.
He said, “If you have heard me earlier, what I have said... that Pakistan, if it continues to harbour terrorists and operate against India, then they have to decide whether they want to be part of geography or history or not.”
The statement, though brief, carried a direct and firm warning to Islamabad. It also reflected India’s continued position that terrorism supported from across the border will not be tolerated. General Dwivedi’s remarks came during the event titled ‘Sena Samwad’, held just days after the country and the armed forces marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India early on May 7 last year after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. In response to the attack, Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on several terror infrastructure sites located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation targeted camps and facilities linked to terrorist activities.
Following the Indian strikes, Pakistan launched offensives against India. In response, India carried out counter-offensives under Operation Sindoor. The military confrontation between the two neighbouring nuclear powers continued for nearly 88 hours and created heightened tensions in the region.
The conflict finally came to a halt after both sides reached an understanding on the evening of May 10. Since then, Operation Sindoor has remained a major reference point in discussions around India’s military response to terrorism and national security policy.
General Dwivedi’s latest comments have once again brought attention to India’s warning against terrorism originating from Pakistan. His remarks also highlighted the Indian Army’s readiness to respond strongly in case of future threats or terror attacks linked to cross-border support.
The Army chief did not go into operational details during the interaction, but his statement underlined the message that India expects firm action against terror groups operating from Pakistani soil. The warning comes at a time when India has repeatedly stressed that peace and dialogue cannot move forward alongside terrorism.
The remarks are being seen as one of the strongest recent public statements from the Indian military leadership on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. By referring to whether Pakistan wants to remain “part of geography or history”, General Dwivedi signalled the seriousness with which India views continued terror activities directed against the country.
