This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Argentina, a milestone that reflects the strong partnership and shared values between the two nations. Mariano A. Caucino, the Argentine Ambassador to India, shared his views on the achievements of this long-standing relationship and its promising future.
“It is an immense privilege to serve as Argentina’s Ambassador to India during such a transformative period,” said Caucino. He praised India’s rapid rise as a global power, noting its significant influence in the Indo-Pacific region. “India’s remarkable achievements—becoming the world’s fifth-largest economy and one of the fastest-growing democracies—are truly impressive,” he added.
Ambassador Caucino highlighted the alignment of core values between India and Argentina. “We have great admiration for the high principles that India upholds—democracy, freedom, and respect for human dignity,” he stated. “These are values that Argentina shares deeply, and they form the bedrock of our bilateral relationship.”
The partnership between the two countries has extended to various international platforms. During India’s G20 presidency last year, both nations collaborated to tackle global challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, and poverty. “These are issues that transcend borders and require global solutions,” Caucino emphasised. He also expressed gratitude for India’s consistent support of Argentina’s stance on the ‘Malvinas Question’ at the United Nations, highlighting the deep mutual respect between the two countries.
On the economic front, Ambassador Caucino noted the growth in bilateral trade, which has reached $4.6 billion. “Argentina has become a key supplier of soybean and sunflower oil to India, which are vital for ensuring food security for Indian consumers,” he said. The ambassador also pointed out the involvement of Indian mining companies in Argentina’s Catamarca province, exploring lithium, copper, and gold—resources critical for India’s electric vehicle industry.
Caucino underscored the importance of private sector involvement, citing examples such as the Argentine IT firm Globant’s presence in Pune and the UPL Group’s operations in Argentina. “These collaborations highlight the depth of our economic ties and are essential as we continue to build a multifaceted partnership,” he remarked.
Cultural exchanges have also played a crucial role in strengthening the relationship. “Our cultural ties run deep and even predate our diplomatic relations,” said Caucino, referencing Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Argentina in 1924 and his friendship with Victoria Ocampo. This connection was celebrated in the film “Thinking About Him,” a joint production by India and Argentina showcased at international film festivals.
In addition to cultural connections, shared interests in sports and wellness bring the two nations closer. “Tango has found enthusiastic followers in India, while Yoga has become a significant cultural phenomenon in Argentina, celebrated massively on International Yoga Day,” Caucino noted.
The ambassador also highlighted the growing defence cooperation between India and Argentina. “Our armed forces have a long history of collaboration, based on shared expertise and mutual support. This cooperation is a model of international military partnership, rooted in trust, respect, and a shared vision for global security,” he said.
Looking to the future, Ambassador Caucino, a lawyer and author of books on Foreign Affairs and Contemporary History, expressed optimism. “As we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties, it’s clear that our partnership is not just enduring but also poised for further growth. The shared history, values, and mutual respect that underpin this relationship ensure that our two nations will continue to work closely together, shaping a future defined by peace, prosperity, and shared progress.”
