According to reports, Applied Materials announced its plans to construct an engineering centre in Bengaluru, focusing on the development and commercialization of technologies for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The estimated investment for this venture is $400 million over a span of four years.
As per reports, the centre is expected to be situated near Applied's existing campus in Bengaluru. It is projected that within the first five years of operation, the centre will facilitate over $2 billion of planned investments and generate a minimum of 500 new advanced engineering positions, along with the potential for an additional 2,500 jobs in the manufacturing ecosystem.
“Our plan to establish a new collaborative engineering centre in Bangalore strengthens our efforts to help advance India on its journey to becoming a global semiconductor hub," Srinivas Satya, country president of Applied Materials India said in a statement.
According to Satya, the objective of the center is to foster crucial synergies among engineers, academia, and suppliers.
The company stated that the centre will serve as a collaborative hub, allowing them to work together in a unified location with the shared objective of expediting the development of semiconductor equipment sub-systems and components. Additionally, the centre will provide training and development opportunities to cultivate talent for the future of the semiconductor industry.
“We envision Applied’s strong base of engineering talent collaborating more deeply with domestic and global companies operating in India to strengthen the foundational equipment supply chain serving the global semiconductor manufacturing industry," Prabu Raja, president of the semiconductor products group at Applied Materials added.
As part of its existing strategy to expand its global innovation infrastructure, the engineering centre represents an important milestone for the company. Applied Materials currently maintains a strong presence in India, operating across six sites and boasting a robust organization encompassing product development, research and development (R&D), information technology (IT), and operational capabilities.
The company actively collaborates with renowned academic institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, where Applied has established a Materials Development centre dedicated to advancing cutting-edge chemistry and materials for the semiconductor industry. The establishment of the new engineering centre will further reinforce Applied's high-velocity innovation platform, which also includes the upcoming EPIC centre in Silicon Valley, according to the company's statement.
