The Land Port Authority of India, directed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is bolstering the security infrastructure at Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) nationwide. This initiative involves the installation of Radiation Detection Equipment (RDE) aimed at identifying any attempts to illegally import radioactive materials into India.
Under the directive to enhance security measures, the Land Port Authority of India is actively implementing the deployment of RDE across Integrated Check Posts. This proactive step is part of a comprehensive strategy to mitigate potential threats and safeguard the country against the illicit entry of radioactive substances.
The incorporation of Radiation Detection Equipment at key border checkpoints underscores the government's commitment to fortifying the nation's defenses by leveraging advanced technology to detect and prevent any unauthorized transportation of hazardous materials that pose a potential risk to public safety and national security.
Land Port Authority officials have disclosed plans to enhance security measures at a total of 10 checkposts across the country. The initiative involves the installation of Radiation Detection Equipment (RDE) at six of these checkpoints, with ongoing work at various stages of implementation. A decision to extend this security measure to two additional checkposts is under consideration and will be finalized shortly.
The identified checkposts for the RDE installation include Dera Baba Nanak and Attari in Punjab, Raxul and Jogbani in Bihar, Petrapole in West Bengal, Satarkandi in Assam, Agartala and Srimantapur in Tripura, and Moreh in Manipur, along with Dawki in Meghalaya. The strategic selection of these locations underscores a comprehensive approach to fortifying the security apparatus at key border entry points, addressing potential vulnerabilities, and enhancing the country's defense against the illicit import of radioactive materials.
Among these checkposts, officials have indicated that equipment installation at Petrapole and Moreh Integrated Checkposts will be deferred to a later stage. Additionally, at Dera Baba Nanak, where no goods movement occurs, officials have determined that there is no necessity to install Radiation Detection Equipment (RDE). It's noteworthy that these checkposts are strategically positioned along the land borders with Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
