A day after a failed derailment attempt in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, authorities have uncovered another plot to cause a train accident in Rajasthan. According to initial reports, cement blocks weighing about one quintal were discovered placed along the railway tracks in Ajmer district, suggesting a deliberate attempt to derail a goods train.
In Ajmer, the cement blocks were scattered over a one-kilometre stretch of railway track between Saradhna and Bangad Gram station. Fortunately, the potential derailment was averted as the blocks broke apart and fell from the tracks. Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) employees Ravi Bundela and Vishwajit Das have filed an FIR regarding the incident. The FIR states that at 10:36 pm on September 8th, authorities were informed about the blocks. Upon arrival, they found that both blocks had already fallen apart.
Following the incident, DFCC and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted patrols from Saradhna to Bangad Gram station and reported that the situation was normalised. A police investigation is underway.
The Rail Ministry has expressed concern over recent events, revealing that in the past week, there have been three derailment attempts and two incidents of stone pelting at trains. This surge in sabotage attempts highlights the criminal intent of miscreants, according to Rail Ministry officials speaking to Times of India.
The official referenced a previous incident in Kapur, Uttar Pradesh, where a gas cylinder placed on the tracks was discovered in time to prevent a major mishap. Similarly, yesterday in Kanpur, a potential derailment of the Kalindi Express was averted when the loco pilot applied emergency brakes upon hearing the sound of a gas cylinder on the tracks. The authorities later found a petrol-filled glass bottle, a matchbox, and a suspicious bag near the site.
Other recent incidents include a near-derailment on August 31st in Rajasthan’s Baran district, where a loco pilot avoided disaster by applying emergency brakes after encountering motorcycle scrap on the tracks. On August 17th, the Sabarmati Express derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur due to a broken piece of track metal placed on the line. Additionally, on August 22nd, Afsan was charged in Aligarh for placing an alloy wheel on the tracks, attempting to recreate the Kanpur accident.
On August 23rd, the Farrukhabad Express narrowly avoided an accident after hitting a wooden log placed on the tracks, which was later found stuck to the train’s engine. In October of the previous year, a potential derailment of the Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express was averted when stones and rods were discovered on the tracks.
The Indian Railways and investigating agencies are continuing their probe into these sabotage attempts and are considering potential terrorist involvement.
