Fast-moving political developments surrounding former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai have led to significant changes within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including a revised Rajya Sabha seat-sharing arrangement in Andhra Pradesh. Annamalai has formally announced his exit from the BJP today in his video address. The BJP has now stepped aside from its claim to one of the four Rajya Sabha seats that are falling vacant in the state, marking an important shift in alliance calculations.
According to sources, the seat was earlier being considered for K Annamalai. However, following his resignation from the BJP and his decision to begin a new political journey, the alliance partners worked out a fresh formula for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Senior NDA leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief Pawan Kalyan, and state BJP leaders, met in Amaravati on Thursday to finalise the revised arrangement. Under the new formula, three of the four Rajya Sabha seats will go to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), while the remaining seat will be allotted to the Jana Sena Party.
The decision marks a departure from the earlier understanding among alliance partners. Sources said the previous arrangement had reportedly reserved one Rajya Sabha seat each for the BJP and the Jana Sena Party, while the TDP was expected to contest the remaining two seats. The latest development means the BJP has voluntarily withdrawn its claim, allowing its allies to share all four seats.
The meeting in Amaravati also focused on strengthening coordination among NDA partners in Andhra Pradesh. Leaders decided to organise three major public meetings later this month in Tirupati, Amaravati and Visakhapatnam. These events are expected to showcase unity within the alliance and improve coordination between the TDP, JSP and BJP ahead of future political challenges.
The change in the Rajya Sabha formula comes at a time when Annamalai’s political future has become a major talking point. The former IPS officer held a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi on June 2. During his visit, he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh.
Sources said Annamalai briefed the party leadership about the political situation in Tamil Nadu and discussed the reasons behind his decision to step away from the BJP. During these meetings, he is understood to have informed senior leaders about his intention to resign from the party.
Today, Annamalai formally announced his departure and unveiled plans for a new political movement. In a social media address on Friday, he confirmed that his political journey would continue outside the BJP and that he intended to pursue a different approach to public life and politics.
Explaining his decision, Annamalai said, “Goals are bigger, more people have to be taken along,” indicating that his ambitions now extend beyond the framework of a traditional political party.
The former Tamil Nadu BJP chief maintained that his exit from the party was entirely his own decision and took place on amicable terms. “I have quit the BJP in a dignified manner, to usher in a new kind of politics,” he said.
Annamalai also outlined his vision for the movement he plans to build in the coming months. He suggested that it would focus on a fresh style of politics and wider public participation. According to him, the initiative would not merely function as another political platform but would attempt to bring a new perspective to political engagement.
Speaking about the direction of the movement, he said, “Our movement must be, from foundation, have a new dimension, a new perspective.”
While Annamalai has not yet revealed detailed plans regarding the structure of the movement or its organisational framework, his announcement has already generated considerable interest in political circles, especially in Tamil Nadu. His departure comes after years of being one of the BJP’s most prominent faces in the state and a key figure in the party’s efforts to expand its presence there.
Political observers believe the timing of his exit has had an immediate impact on alliance dynamics, as reflected in the revised Rajya Sabha seat-sharing arrangement in Andhra Pradesh. The BJP’s decision to give up its claim to a seat has strengthened the position of its alliance partners and ensured a smoother distribution of seats within the NDA.
The developments indicate that Annamalai’s departure is influencing political calculations beyond Tamil Nadu. At the same time, his decision to launch a new movement has opened a new chapter in his political career. As the NDA prepares for upcoming elections and alliance activities, attention will remain focused on both the evolving equations within the alliance and the future course of Annamalai’s newly announced political initiative.
