The Andhra Pradesh Minority Welfare Department has ordered the demolition of the Calvary Temple Church in Namburu, Guntur District amid multiple serious allegations. Demolition work will proceed as per legal guidelines for structures operated without the required permits.
A Vasantharayapuram, a Guntur resident, filed a formal complaint with the PMO office in November 2024. The complaint highlights five serious allegations against the church. These allegations are the church's alleged illegal operations, as well as the lack of the required approvals from government bodies such as the Panchayat Raj, Revenue, Police Department, and Noise Pollution Control Board.
The petitioner also mentioned that the church led by Rev. Dr. Satish Kumar, a pastor from Hyderabad, is collecting large sums of money in tithes without paying taxes. Also, they are accused of converting Hindus into Christians. Given the application, the matter was investigated, the demolition order was confirmed, and appropriate action was taken to demolish the illegal structure.
The founder and pastor, P. Satish Kumar of Calvary Temple in Hyderabad, runs this church, one of Asia's largest churches, with over 400,000 members and over 20,000 attendees at each service. The organisation also runs Calvary Bible College, Calvary Hospital and Calvary Schools. He is highly influential in Andhra Pradesh and has a significant national and international presence in Christian circles. He often visits churches in South Korea, South Africa and the United States for preaching.
In 2018, he met with then-Vice President of the United States Mike Pence, who commented, “It was inspiring to meet with Dr. Satish Kumar, pastor of Calvary Temple Church in Hyderabad, India. We discussed the importance of protecting religious freedom with faith leaders, including Dr. David Jeremiah, Dr. John Ankerberg, Steve Green, Mart Green, and Dr. Jerry Johnson.”
Furthermore, Calvary Temple is a habitual offender who violates land laws, often establishing new churches and acquiring land through fraudulent contracts.
The Legal Rights Protection Forum posted on social media platform X that, by order of the Kakinada District Collector, the digital church branch Kalvari Temple, which Hyderabad-based pastor Satish Kumar runs, was seized by revenue officials on October 28, 2024.
