On Tuesday, the Aarakshan Sangharsh Morcha organised a march to demand reservation for Dalits, backward classes, and Other Backward Classes in the admission process at Aligarh Muslim University.
The newly formed student group organised a march on the university campus, with strict security in place. The authorities set up barricades on the roads leading to the campus. Protesters gathered at Raja Mahendra Pratap Chowk in Civil Lines and marched to University Circle, the entrance to the campus, shouting anti-AMU and religious slogans. At the end of the march, some protesters attempted to break through the barricades but were stopped by force.
Protesters gave a memorandum intended for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Additional City Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Mishra, who accepted it on behalf of the District Magistrate. Mishra later told reporters that the procession took place peacefully. In their memorandum, the students requested reservation for Hindu Dalits, backward classes, and tribals in AMU until the Supreme Court gave its ruling on the matter. A university official mentioned that the protesters shouted "provocative slogans" near the AMU Circle.
"The issue of reservation to any community now rests totally with the Supreme Court of India which is examining the entire matter in the light of the Constitution of the country and the legal status of the University," AMU spokesman and Member In-charge, Public Relations, Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui said. He claimed that a misleading impression was being spread and that there was no reservation for Muslims in any course at the University.
"The only reservation which exists is the reservation for internal students which includes members of all communities. So the question of providing religion- or caste-based reservation does not arise till the apex court decides on this matter," Siddiqui said.
