Amit Shah lays foundation stone of new Assam Assembly building, inaugurates projects worth ₹825 crore

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Assam on a day-long tour and laid the foundation stone of the new Assam Legislative Assembly building in Dibrugarh. During his visit, he also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for five major development projects worth around ₹825 crore. The visit focused on development, governance, and cultural programmes in Upper Assam.
At the event, Amit Shah paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary. He said, “Today is Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, and I pay my respects to him. Today, here, the groundbreaking and inauguration of five projects totalling approximately Rs 825 crores took place.” He also congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for fulfilling the promise of making Assam more inclusive. Shah stated, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Chief Minister of Assam. He had announced in 2025 that we would make Assam inclusive, and he had declared the decision to make Dibrugarh the second capital of Assam.”
Amit Shah compared the current government with previous Congress governments and said that earlier announcements often remained limited to paper, but the present government had turned commitments into real action. He highlighted the importance of the new legislative complex and described it as a historic step for the region. Shah said, “Today, residents of Dibrugarh will be recognised across the country as citizens of Assam’s capital.”
The foundation stone for Assam’s second legislative complex was laid in Dibrugarh. The complex will be spread over 250 acres and is planned as a modern legislative facility with advanced amenities. Officials said that the new Assembly complex will strengthen administrative infrastructure and improve governance in the state. Along with this, the foundation stone for the Wildlife Research Institute was also laid. The institute is expected to play an important role in scientific research, conservation, and protection of Assam’s rich biodiversity.
Earlier, Amit Shah was felicitated at the event in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The ceremony took place before laying the foundation stone for the new Assembly building. The Union Home Minister’s visit started in Dibrugarh, where he participated in official programmes related to development projects and institutional infrastructure.
Shah also inaugurated Phase I of Khanikar Stadium in Dibrugarh to boost sports infrastructure in Upper Assam. State government officials said that the stadium project will encourage sports activities and provide better facilities for athletes in the region.
After completing the programmes in Dibrugarh, Amit Shah travelled to Dhemaji to attend the 10th Mishing Cultural Festival at Kareng Chapori. The festival is organised annually by the Mishing community and showcases the tribe’s rich cultural heritage. The event includes traditional dance, music, art, attire, and indigenous food, reflecting the cultural identity of the community.
Later in the evening, Amit Shah will arrive in Guwahati to meet party office bearers and karyakartas at the Assam state office. The meeting is expected to focus on organisational matters, upcoming political programmes, and strengthening grassroots outreach in the state. Senior leaders of the Assam unit of the party are likely to brief the Union Home Minister on ongoing initiatives, organisational preparedness, and future strategies. The interaction is also expected to energise party workers ahead of upcoming political activities.
According to reports, Amit Shah’s visit to Assam included a series of official, cultural, and organisational programmes across the state. His visit highlighted the government’s focus on development projects, institutional growth, cultural engagement, and political planning in Upper Assam. The laying of the foundation stone of the new Assam Legislative Assembly building and the inauguration of multiple projects marked a significant step in the state’s development journey.
