Ghaziabad Police filed a case against Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, on Monday. He faces charges, including allegedly promoting hatred among religious groups. An associate of the controversial priest Yati Narsinghanad filed the complaint.
Several FIRs and protests have been brought against Dasna Devi temple priest Narsinghanand in response to a hate speech he allegedly delivered at Hindi Bhawan in Ghaziabad on September 29. However, according to reports, He along with his aids were taken into custody by Uttar Pradesh police. While speaking with a reporter, Zubair said, “It is unfortunate. There were other journalists who reported the news but the FIR against me looks intentional.” He also added that the Ghaziabad police filed the FIR against him without any verification.
Udita Tyagi, general secretary of the Yati Narsinghanad Saraswati Trust, filed a complaint against Zubair at the Kavi Nagar police station at 2:19 p.m., according to the police. In the complaint, Tyagi claimed that Zubair had uploaded a video clip from an earlier episode of Narsinghanand's show on October 3 in an attempt to incite violence against the priest by Muslims. She also added that Zubair altered footage of the priest and shared it on social media to stir up more extreme feelings against him.
“He posted a series of videos on October 4 and 5, leading to an attempt to ‘attack’ the Dasna Devi temple. I was present with Yati at the temple and we barely escaped. Had the police not intervened, the situation would have gotten out of hand,” Tyagi alleged in the complaint.
She further claimed that Zubair had mentioned the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, BJP MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar as well as her name in his tirade. She also claimed to have received death threats on social media after this.
According to police, sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion), 228 (fabricating false evidence), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 356(3) (defamation), and 351(2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) are the reasons behind the FIR against Zubair.
In the meantime, more than a hundred people assembled in front of the Ghaziabad Police Commissioner's office on Monday and delivered a memo requesting information about Narasinghanand's whereabouts. The crowd also raised a demand for action against Zubair for making remarks against him.
"We're investigating the matter," said Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra, adding that action will be taken against those inciting people on social media. Police said that they increased security around the Dasna Devi temple on Friday night in response to a sizable gathering outside the temple to express opposition to Narsinghanand. On Sunday, 10 people were detained by police on suspicion of throwing stones during the demonstration.
