Disclaimer: I don't like dwelling into the story. That's for you to go & watch in theatre. I will only tell you what I felt about the movie.
Direction:
I have always been a fan of Trivikram’s work. His writing is something I enjoy the most in all his films (barring a few). This one is no exception. The writing is so poetic that it actually elevates a simple scene into a more meaningful and an engaging one.
Right from the opening scene where he establishes the premise to the climax, he waves his magic wand to floor us with his writing.
The emotional drama that he wove between the characters came out really well. There are few scenes like below that stand out and leave a lasting impression on us
- The emotional scene between Tabu and Jayaram
- The scene between Allu Arjun and Murali Sharma after Allu Arjun knows the truth about his birth
- And lastly the climax scene which will have you in tears
All this is possible majorly because of the immaculate writing that only Trivikram can pull off.
There are also scenes like below that shine because of the creative genius of Trivikram:
- The scene in which Allu Arjun compares Women with the Mother Earth and asks all to surrender to them no matter what, is so refreshing and contextually fitting
- Same can be said about the confrontation scene between Allu Arjun and Samuthirakani and the way Allu Arjun imitates Samuthirakani’s style will have us in splits
- The scene where our hero plays a medley of hit songs in a board meeting. Though it is off track, you wouldn’t complain since it is entertaining
The movie has so many such scenes that makes it an engaging watch.
Besides, he did some innovative things too in the movie like that climax fight which has a folk song from Srikakulam as its background and also the first fight in which he goes after the goons who take away his Sister’s chunni. The choreography and theme of these fights are so refreshing to say the least.
Acting:
I have always liked Allu Arjun. With this one, I am officially a fan. He breathes life into the character of “Bantu” (a slave in Telugu) that showcases all emotions possible. You root for him throughout.
- His acting and the way he emotes especially in the climax scene is fabulous. You would become teary eyed watching his earnest performance in this one
- His dialogue delivery with his trademark mannerisms will have us root for him throughout
- His dances are as always, a treat to your eyes though I personally felt this movie did not do justice to his dancing prowess
- And finally, his swag will win you over. This is by far his best performance till date. No wonder this duo has clicked big time for the third time.
Music:
All this magic of course would not have been possible without the contribution from Thaman whose music adds another dimension altogether. Be it songs or background score, his contribution is of top notch. Not often do you see a movie where all the songs are chartbusters. This movie is one such musical masterpiece.
Other characters:
- Special mention to Murali Sharma, who plays the role of a cold hearted, wicked father is extraordinary
- Tabu did a fine job in a role that is not a full-fledged one
- Pooja Hegde, Sunil, Sushant, Navdeep, Jayaram and others too contributed in their own small way to make this an engaging watch
Technical department:
It feels like all the departments behind the camera complemented each other well when you see the output on the big screen starting from the Cinematography (especially in the song “Samajavaragamana”) to choreography in songs to choreography in fights. Editing and screenplay I thought could have been better.
Positives:
- Trivikram’s writing and direction
- Allu Arjun’s performance
- Music (songs and background score)
- Dance and fight choreography
- Climax scene
Glitches:
- It however has its share of flaws like the romantic thread between Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde that is thin and unconvincing.
- At times, you feel like the editing and the screenplay is out of place.
Despite its flaws, this movie will make you feel good when you walk out of the theatre. I haven’t enjoyed a movie so much in the recent times.
Go, have some fun watching this one.
My rating: 3.75/5
