Myanmar’s military carried out an airstrike in Pazi Gyi village, Rakhine State, resulting in widespread devastation and significant civilian casualties, according to a statement from the United Nations. The attack claimed dozens of lives, leaving the community in shock and grief.
“Initial reports indicate that dozens of people, including women and children, have been killed or injured in the airstrike,” the UN said in a statement, as quoted by the Associated Press (AP).
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the attack. A local resident told, “The bombing happened during a gathering in the village. People were celebrating when the airstrike hit, causing many deaths.”
The military’s actions have faced widespread condemnation from the international community. The United Nations has urged an immediate end to violence against civilians, emphasising the need for accountability and the protection of human rights.
“The use of airstrikes against civilian populations is deeply concerning and must stop immediately,” a UN spokesperson told AP.
Rakhine State has long been a hotspot of conflict between the Myanmar military and local ethnic armed groups. Civilians in the region have suffered immensely, bearing the brunt of the ongoing clashes, with many forced to flee their homes and seek safety elsewhere.
“This attack highlights the dire need for accountability and justice for victims of violence in Myanmar,” a human rights activist told AP.
The Myanmar military has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the airstrike. Meanwhile, the United Nations and international organisations are calling for urgent humanitarian assistance to support the affected community in the aftermath of the attack.
