On October 15, an Air India flight travelling from Delhi to Chicago was diverted to Iqaluit Airport in Canada due to a bomb threat received online. The decision to reroute the flight was made to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. An airline official confirmed the incident to PTI, highlighting the swift response to the threat.
“Flight AI127 operating from Delhi to Chicago on October 15, 2024, was the subject of a security threat posted online and, as a precautionary measure, has landed at Iqaluit Airport in Canada,” Air India said in a statement to PTI. “The aircraft and passengers are being re-screened as per the laid down security protocol. Air India has activated agencies at the airport to assist the passengers until such time that their journey can resume,” the airline further said.
Air India reported that all passengers on the diverted flight are undergoing re-screening in accordance with security protocols. This incident follows a troubling trend, as multiple flights have recently received bomb threats, raising significant safety concerns regarding air travel.
Additionally, on the same day, an Air India flight en route from Mumbai to New York was diverted to Delhi due to a bomb threat. Following established security protocols, a comprehensive inspection of the aircraft was conducted, revealing no suspicious items. Air India noted that both its airline and other local carriers have been targeted by a series of threats in recent days.
"Though all have subsequently been found to be hoaxes, as a responsible airline operator all threats are taken seriously. The inconvenience to customers is sincerely regretted," it said.
In its statement, Air India emphasised its commitment to cooperating fully with authorities to identify the individuals behind these bomb threat hoaxes. The airline also indicated that it would consider pursuing legal action against those responsible in order to recover any damages incurred as a result of these threats.
