Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed minutes after take-off with 242 on board

Air India confirmed that flight AI171, which flew from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed minutes after take-off on Thursday afternoon. The flight carried 242 people, including passengers and crew. Among them, 169 were Indian nationals and 53 were British nationals. The flight also included seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian.
Air India stated, "The injured were taken to the nearest hospitals." The airline also added, "We have set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information."
The London-bound flight included two pilots, 10 crew members, and 230 passengers. Authorities had not yet determined the cause of the crash at the time of the report.
Air India flight AI171 departed from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 pm. It crashed five minutes after take-off.
Horrifying videos surfaced online showing the moment the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft went down. Rescue operations were underway, and fire services reached the crash site.
Flight tracking platform FlightRadar showed that the aircraft climbed to an altitude of 625 feet before it crashed. Officials suspended all flights out of the airport until further notice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep shock over the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. He called the incident “heartbreaking beyond words.”
PM Modi posted on X, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. I have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”
President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the crash. She called it a “heart-rending disaster.”
She wrote on X, “My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. The nation stands with them in this hour of indescribable grief.”
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman offered her condolences after the crash of the Air India aircraft near Ahmedabad Airport, which carried 242 people, including crew members.
Sitharaman posted, “Distressed on hearing about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. My prayers are with all families and friends of those on board the flight.”
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said he was “deeply pained to learn about the plane crash in Ahmedabad.” He wrote, “I convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We stand firmly with those grieving and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. Om Shanti.”
Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and other Supreme Court judges on Thursday expressed their deepest sympathies to the families affected by the crash of the London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad.
The Supreme Court released a statement: “The Chief Justice of India and Companion Judges of the Supreme Court of India, along with the officials of the Registry, express deepest condolence to the families affected by the tragic air crash at Ahmedabad today.”
CJI Gavai also shared concern for residents of B J Medical College, where the plane crashed, causing damage to buildings on the premises.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and former Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on Thursday expressed solidarity with the people of India after the crash in Ahmedabad.
Von der Leyen posted on X, “Heartbreaking news from India with the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones grieving this terrible loss. We share your pain. Dear @narendramodi, Europe stands in solidarity with you and the people of India in this moment of sorrow.”
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu wrote, “At this difficult time, the government and people of #Maldives stand in solidarity with the people and the Government of India.”
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he was deeply distressed to learn about the tragic crash. He stated, “On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected. We share in India’s sorrow and stand in full solidarity as relief efforts continue. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and with everyone mourning this terrible loss.”
Nepal’s former Prime Minister Prachanda wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. Nepal stands in solidarity with India in this moment of grief.”
