The Maharashtra government declared in an official notification on Monday that desi (indigenous) cows will be titled 'Rajyamata-Gomata' in acknowledgement of their significance since the Vedic era. The state's Department of Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries released a government resolution citing other factors as the value of native cow milk for human nutrition, the use of cow manure in organic farming, and the application of ayurvedic and panchgavya treatments.
According to an official, the decision highlights the cow's spiritual, scientific, and historical significance in Indian society and comes ahead of the state assembly elections. He continued, "It emphasises the crucial role that cows have played in India's cultural landscape for centuries."
He claimed that by making this decision, the state government has highlighted the advantages of cow dung for agriculture, including improved soil fertility, increased human nutrition, and demonstrated government support for environmentally friendly farming methods.
While showcasing different breeds of cows from all over India, the Maharashtra government expressed concern about the decline in the native cow population. The government also emphasised in its official order the use of cow dung in agriculture as a means of providing humans with nutrition in the form of staple foods. Given the significance of cows and their products in terms of religion and culture, as well as socioeconomic considerations, the government pushed cattle rearers to raise Indigenous cows.
Notably, Hinduism in India accords the cow the status of mother, and it is revered. Other than this, its dung, urine, and milk are revered and utilised extensively. While cow urine is said to be able to treat a wide range of illnesses, cow milk is extremely good for human health.
