The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has launched the Digital Crop Survey (DCS) System to collect real-time data on crops directly from the field using a mobile platform. This advanced system provides accurate and up-to-date information on crop coverage for each agricultural plot, helping improve production estimates.
As part of this initiative, the Agri Stack has been developed in compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and other Indian IT laws. According to Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur, the system prioritises farmers' data privacy and security. Farmers' data is collected only with their consent, allowing them complete control over its sharing, which is restricted to authorised entities for specific purposes. Agri Stack's data privacy is strengthened by its federal structure, allowing states to retain entire control over their datasets.
The Government of India also implements strong cybersecurity measures by following guidelines from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Farmers' data is encrypted and shared securely through designated systems using secure APIs and token-based authentication. Regular security audits and risk assessments are conducted to maintain data protection.
Support is provided through existing networks like Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Krishi Sakhis, and Common Service Centres (CSCs) to promote digital inclusion, especially for farmers without mobile phones. States are also holding camps to ensure all farmers can access the benefits of Agri Stack. Additionally, the government is offering administrative and technical assistance to states to implement this initiative effectively. The State Farmer Registry, part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, includes all landowners, including women farmers. It also allows states to register tenant and lessee farmers based on their policies, ensuring a more inclusive system.
