Restaurants and eateries in Himachal Pradesh will soon be required to display the names of their owners and staff, following the example set by the BJP government in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. The new rule is set to be finalised in an upcoming meeting and will be implemented from January, starting in the state capital, Shimla. This interim period will be used for preparations, including the issuance of identity cards.
"We have decided to strictly enforce these rules in the state, much like Uttar Pradesh," said Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh. He emphasised that the initiative aims to ensure the supply of hygienic food. The decision was made collectively by the Urban Development Ministry and the Municipal Corporation, considering people's concerns about food safety at stalls.
Earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh government sparked a significant political controversy by mandating the display of names of eatery owners, managers, and proprietors outside food centres along the Kanwar Yatra routes.
In response to widespread criticism, the state government clarified that the order was intended to promote transparency and help Kanwariyas make informed choices about the food they consume during their pilgrimage.
However, on September 24, the order was reinforced due to reports of human waste being mixed with food in restaurants and eateries.
Earlier, on September 12, a video circulated widely on social media showing a teenager spitting on rotis while preparing them at an eatery in Saharanpur district. Additionally, a juice vendor in Ghaziabad district was arrested last week for allegedly serving fruit juices mixed with urine. In June, two men were also arrested in Noida for reportedly spitting in juices before serving them to customers.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has mandated that the names and addresses of operators, proprietors, and managers must be displayed at all food centres. He has also instructed that chefs and waiters should wear masks and gloves. Additionally, the installation of CCTVs in hotels and restaurants has been made compulsory to enhance food safety and hygiene standards.
