Following Sam Pitroda's resignation as Indian Overseas Congress chief due to a racially insensitive comment, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury sparked further controversy by asserting the presence of "people of N-type class and Mongolians" in India.
Chowdhury remarked, "There are people of 'N' type class in our country, some resemble 'Mongolians', some are black, some are white, there's no denying." His statement comes in the wake of Pitroda's recent controversial remarks regarding India's diversity, which sparked widespread political uproar.
In a podcast, he stated, "We have thrived for 75 years in a harmonious atmosphere, where people could coexist peacefully, with occasional disagreements."
Pitroda stated in the interview, "We have managed to unite a country as diverse as India, where individuals in the east resemble the Chinese, those in the west resemble the Arabs, some in the north may appear white, and those in the south resemble Africans. However, it does not diminish our bond as brothers and sisters. We embrace diverse languages, religions, customs, and cuisines."
His remarks quickly gained traction on social media platforms. BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticised Pitroda for his comments, questioning, "Will people's capabilities be determined in my country based on skin colour?"
"Who authorised the 'shehzada' to engage in this discussion on skin colour?" he inquired, alluding to Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader.
Amidst the strong criticism, Pitroda voluntarily resigned from his position as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress.
"Mr. Sam Pitroda has chosen to step down as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress on his own volition. The Congress President has acknowledged his decision," stated Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on X.
He added that the analogies drawn by Pitroda were "highly regrettable and cannot be condoned".
"In a statement on his official social media account, he expressed that the analogies put forth by Sam Pitroda in a podcast to highlight India's diversity are highly regrettable and cannot be condoned. The Indian National Congress fully disassociates itself from these analogies," he stated.
