Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab faced a double setback as its Jalandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku and Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural switched allegiance and joined the BJP in Delhi.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri extended a warm welcome to Sushil Kumar Rinku and Sheetal Angural upon their joining of the BJP. He expressed optimism about the evolving landscape in Punjab and emphasised collective efforts towards India's development by 2047.
Sushil Kumar Rinku secured victory in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat by defeating Congress leader Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary by a margin of nearly 60,000 votes during the by-election held in 2023. In the 2019 elections, Congress' Santokh Singh Chaudhary emerged victorious by defeating Akali Dal's Charanjit Singh Atwal by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.
Following his decision to join the BJP, Rinku stated that the promises he made to the people of Jalandhar remained unfulfilled due to a lack of support from the AAP. He expressed admiration for the working methods of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He added, "I have made this decision with the aim of advancing the development of Jalandhar. Our objective is to propel Jalandhar forward by implementing various projects of the Central Government."
Sheetal Angural, who joined the saffron party alongside Rinku, won in Jalandhar West assembly seat by defeating the former Congress leader Sushil Kumar Rinku.
The Lok Sabha elections for the year 2024 in Punjab are scheduled to take place in a single phase on June 1st, to elect 13 MPs to represent the state. Elections in the state of Punjab are held on June 1, in the final round of polling across the entire country.
