Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Aam Aadmi Party leader Dilip Pandey, along with several other party leaders, were detained on Saturday while protesting outside Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s residence. The protest was in response to the ongoing bus marshals issue.
This marks the second time that Saurabh Bharadwaj has been detained by the police while demanding the reinstatement of marshals in Delhi buses.
On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena held a meeting with bus marshals regarding their reinstatement. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, accompanied by AAP and BJP MLAs, visited Saxena’s office to submit a note seeking his approval on the issue. The note, which had previously been passed in a cabinet meeting, addressed the reinstatement of bus marshals. BJP MLAs had also met with Atishi over the matter, with the chief minister urging them to join the delegation submitting the note to the L-G for approval.
However, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that the party did not raise the issue with the Lieutenant Governor regarding the approval of the proposal for reinstating bus marshals.
“The BJP demanded a Cabinet proposal to be passed in the meeting. We called an emergency Cabinet meeting and signed the resolution that was passed in the Delhi Assembly to regularise the jobs of bus marshals. We have provided a copy to the BJP as well, but they were exposed. First, the BJP was not ready to go to L-G House. Once they did, they did not say anything to L-G about the passing of the proposal. Delhi government took the Cabinet decision to make bus marshals jobs permanent, now the ball is in the BJP’s court,” Atishi told reporters.
“We called an emergency cabinet meeting and the resolution that was passed by the Delhi assembly to regularise bus marshal was signed upon. Even after coming here, BJP MLAs were not ready to ask the L-G to pass that Cabinet note. This is a betrayal against the bus marshal. The things that were to be done by the cabinet – to regularise bus marshals and civil defence volunteers, have been done. Now, the BJP has to regularise them and allot them joining letters,” the Delhi CM added.
The BJP Delhi official handle posted on X about the meeting of Saxena with bus marshals and said, “The Lt Gov Delhi met with a delegation of Bus Marshals today and assured them that their request would be given positive consideration. The meeting was arranged by State President Virendra Sachdeva. The Delhi BJP does not believe in politicising humanitarian causes, which is why we facilitated a direct meeting.”
Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj revealed that BJP Delhi chief Vijender Gupta had requested a meeting with the Chief Minister, assuring that the remaining work regarding the reinstatement of bus marshals would be handled through the Lieutenant Governor.
Meanwhile, bus marshals have been protesting to be reinstated after their services were terminated by L-G VK Saxena in October last year. On Thursday, Saurabh Bharadwaj and other AAP members were detained by police while protesting at Chandgiram Akhara in Delhi.
