Tarlochan Singh, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was shot and killed by an unknown attacker in his village, Ikolaha, in Ludhiana’s Khanna area on Monday evening, according to police.
Singh, who was the AAP’s kisan wing coordinator in Khanna, was found dead around 6:45 pm, said Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashwini Gotyal. “He had bullet injuries. We have started an investigation,” SSP Gotyal told The Indian Express.
Police have recovered CCTV footage that shows one attacker stopping Singh, who was on his two-wheeler, and shooting him. Singh reportedly had three bullet wounds, including one to the head. “We found three bullet shells at the scene. The autopsy report is still awaited,” the SSP said.
Singh was formerly with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) but joined AAP before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Khanna AAP MLA, Tarunpreet Singh Sond, expressed his grief over the loss. “This is a big loss for our party. He was an active leader and closely connected with farmers. It seems his rivals are behind this murder,” Sond said.
Sond also shared that he received a call around 6 pm from another party worker saying Singh was found injured near the village’s drain (sua). “He was taken to a private hospital and then to the Civil Hospital in Khanna, but he had already passed away,” Sond said. He mentioned that Singh had earlier contested the sarpanch elections but lost by a narrow margin.
Singh’s son, Harpreet Singh, believes his father was killed because of “rivalry and personal enmity.” “My father was shot twice in the head, which shows the attackers came with the clear intention to kill him. I urge the police to catch the culprits quickly,” Harpreet said.
