The alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress in Haryana is said to have encountered a major hurdle during seat-sharing discussions. According to sources speaking to India Today TV, Congress leaders in Haryana are reluctant to allocate a substantial number of seats to AAP, causing rising tensions between the two parties.
AAP sources have suggested that if Congress remains firm on the existing seat-sharing arrangement, the alliance will not proceed with the Assembly elections on 5 October.
Sources further mentioned that if Congress refuses to grant AAP more seats, AAP may opt to contest the Haryana Assembly elections independently in 50 constituencies.
The two parties, both members of the INDI alliance that united the opposition for the Lok Sabha elections and delivered unexpectedly strong results, have reached an impasse. Sources indicate that many rebel Congress and BJP leaders are likely to contest under the AAP banner.
Sources have also hinted that AAP will announce its first list of candidates for the upcoming elections on Sunday.
AAP is reportedly aiming to contest 5-7 seats as part of the alliance. The state’s 90-member assembly saw Congress win 31 seats in the last election, while AAP failed to secure any.
Congress's hesitation to grant AAP more seats may stem from concerns over AAP's lacklustre performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. AAP contested just one seat and lost, while Congress fielded candidates in nine seats and secured five wins, preventing the BJP from achieving a second consecutive clean sweep.
The Haryana Assembly election is scheduled for 5 October, with candidates required to submit their nominations by 12 September.
The Election Commission postponed the original election date from 1 October to 5 October to honour the voting customs of the Bishnoi community, a significant group in three districts of the state.
