A major security alert has been issued in Manipur after officials received intelligence input that over 900 Kuki militants have crossed into the state from Myanmar, confirmed the officials. These militants are told to have been trained in using drone bombs, projectiles, missiles, and jungle warfare and could potentially cause massive damage to the state.
According to a report published by India Today said, “They are reportedly grouped in units of 30 members each and currently scattered in the periphery and expected to launch multiple coordinated attacks on Meitei villages around 28 September 2024.” A security advisor has also shared an update on the matter. While confirming the intelligence report, Security Adviser to Manipur Kuldeep Singh stated, “Unless and until it is proved wrong, we believe that it is 100% correct.”
Security agencies in Manipur haven't established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for drone use, meaning no one can fly drones without permission from the authorities, said Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh. This concern follows a recent operation by the Indian Army and Manipur Police, who found a large stash of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the hilly areas of Imphal East district.
Clashes between ethnic armed groups in Myanmar's Chin State and other areas are happening as they fight against the junta. Since India shares a border with Myanmar, some violence has spilled over into border areas. There have also been cases where junta troops crossed into India after being defeated by Chin State rebels.
The operations conducted near the villages of Bongjang and Itham, averted a serious threat to people and property. For over a year, the northeastern state has faced random violence between the majority, Meiteis and the Kukis mainly over quotas and economic benefits.
