Eight AAP MLAs switched to the BJP on Saturday, just four days before the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5. These MLAs had resigned from AAP's primary membership on Friday, citing reasons such as alleged corruption and the party's departure from its original ideology.
This time, the AAP denied poll tickets to all eight of its legislators. These MLAs, who have now joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are Vandana Gaur (Palam), Rohit Mehraulia (Trilokpuri), Girish Soni (Madipur), Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Rajesh Rishi (Uttam Nagar), B S Joon (Bijwasan), Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), and Pawan Sharma (Adarsh Nagar).
After resigning from the AAP, former MLA Vijender Garg announced that he had also submitted his resignation to the Assembly speaker, giving up his membership in the House. Vijender Garg, along with several other leaders from the Kejriwal-led party, joined the BJP in the presence of Baijayant Panda, the national vice-president and in-charge of the Delhi BJP, and state president Virendra Sachdeva.
Panda welcomed the MLAs and leaders to the BJP, calling it a "historic" day as they have rid themselves of "AAPda" (disaster). He expressed hope that after the February 5 elections, Delhi will also be freed from it. The 70-seat Delhi Assembly will hold elections on February 5, with the results to be announced on February 8.
