A US Office of Personnel Management official stated late Wednesday that around 75,000 federal employees in the United States had accepted the administration's deferred buyout program under President Donald Trump.
Trump is using various methods to reduce the civilian workforce of 2.3 million, which he has criticised as inefficient and unfair to him. One approach is offering buyouts, while another is instructing government agencies to plan for large-scale job cuts. Some agencies have already started letting go of recent hires who don’t have full job security. Sources say that officials have been instructed to reduce staff by as much as 70% at certain agencies.
Unions advised their members not to accept the buyout, warning that Trump might not keep his promise. The offer says employees will continue receiving their regular salaries and benefits until October without having to work. However, this isn't guaranteed. The current funding laws end on March 14, and there's no certainty that salaries will be covered after that.
US President Donald Trump has appointed billionaire Elon Musk to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. This department is reviewing payment and employee records to reduce federal spending by $1 trillion. Last year, the total federal budget was $6.75 trillion, with less than 5% allocated to civilian worker salaries.
