A delegation of over 20 Buddhist scholars and prominent figures from Thailand has arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 4th Mekong Ganga Dhammayatra. This pilgrimage, led by Dr. Supachai Viraphuchong, aims to deepen the historical and cultural ties between the Mekong and Ganga civilisations . The event promotes cooperation between India and Thailand while spreading the message of Dhamma, emphasising conflict avoidance and environmental awareness.
Organised by BodhiGaya Vijjalaya 980, the event receives support from several Indian and Thai organisations, including the Vivekananda International Foundation and the International Buddhist Confederation. Dr. Supachai highlighted the shared cultural heritage rooted in Buddhism and Hinduism, underscoring the significance of unity among countries along the Mekong and Ganga rivers.
Dr. Supachai, who has experience as a monk and a successful businessman, envisions spreading Dhamma values globally. His efforts align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of the 21st century as the 'Asian Century,' where Dhamma plays a crucial role in fostering connections between nations.
The Dhamma Yatra continues the journey of the Buddha’s relics, serving as a bridge between India and Thailand. The event also commemorates the 97th birth anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, reflecting a shared commitment to uniting nations through the teachings of Dhamma.
Dr. Sacchidananda Joshi from the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts highlighted the resilience and wisdom of the Mekong civilisations, underscoring their contributions to global culture. Thai Ambassador to India, Pattarat Hongtong, expressed gratitude for the strong ties between the two nations, recognising the role of Dhamma diplomacy in strengthening these bonds.
The Mekong Ganga Dhammayatra continues to serve as a unique platform for celebrating and promoting the shared cultural and spiritual heritage of India and Thailand. Through events like this, both nations aim to foster mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation for a prosperous future.
