Bengaluru experienced widespread panic as 48 private schools received bomb threats via email. In response, school authorities promptly notified the police, leading parents to hurriedly gather at their children's respective schools. Bomb disposal squads were dispatched to the schools to assess the situation and eliminate the possibility of explosive devices. As of now, the security apparatus in Karnataka city has not discovered any bombs inside the schools but remains cautious.
Following the bomb threats received via email, students and staff at the affected schools were evacuated. According to a senior police official, 48 schools were targeted in the threat. The search operation has nearly concluded, and the police have not discovered any suspicious objects during their investigation.
"Prime facie, it appears to be a hoax message. We are also in the process of registering a case in this regard and a thorough investigation is underway," he said. The email asserted that explosives were planted on the school premises. In response, the police promptly deployed multiple teams to the affected schools. Following the evacuation of students and teachers, a thorough search operation was conducted, as confirmed by another senior officer.
According to Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, this is not the first instance of such threats being issued. He stated, "Earlier, similar threat letters and emails had come to schools and they were found to be a hoax for mischief and police had identified those behind it. Police are verifying today's mails too... officials and personnel have gone to all these spots. I appeal to people not to worry, as most likely all these are hoax calls (mails)."
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the email and its origin. Additionally, he has instructed them to ensure the security of schools and temples as a precautionary measure.
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the email appeared to be a hoax but "we should be cautious".He added "Parents are a bit worried, no need to worry. Police are looking into it." He said the senders of the email would be arrested within 24 hours.
As per PTI reports, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara disclosed that the message originated from the email address kharijites@beeble.com. The email claimed that 15 schools were rigged with bombs on their premises.
"We will verify as to who is behind it and if there is the involvement of any terrorist organisation, and take measures accordingly. For now, it cannot be said who is behind it. The message in the email asks people to convert and other things, it will be verified," he told reporters.
