The Tripura Police have arrested 25 Rohingyas, including six women and seven children, from two separate locations in North Tripura district for entering the state without proper documentation, officials reported on Friday. Police stated that the arrests took place on Thursday night in the Dharmanagar and Churaibari areas as the individuals were attempting to travel to Hyderabad in search of employment opportunities.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that preliminary evidence suggests the group entered through Sonamura in Sepahijala district and Kailashahar in Unakoti district.
The police officer further stated that the Rohingya infiltrators left their camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, and subsequently entered India without valid documents, aided by traffickers.
Sources in the police said that the accused were planning to go to Guwahati on a bus and then to Hyderabad on a train in search of jobs.
In the past few weeks, a significant number of Bangladeshi and Rohingya individuals have been arrested at Agartala Railway Station and various other parts of Tripura while attempting to board trains or vehicles to leave the state.
Over 30 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at Agartala Railway Station in the last four days itself.
Tripura shares an 856 km international border with Bangladesh, with some sections yet to be fenced.
According to a Border Security Force (BSF) report, a total of 1,018 people, including 498 Bangladeshi nationals, have been detained in Tripura from January of last year to April 15 of this year while attempting to cross the Indo-Bangladesh international border.
The detentions of the infiltrators have increased compared to previous years. In 2022, the BSF detained 369 people, including 150 Bangladeshi nationals, 160 Indians and 59 Rohingyas, while in 2021, 208 intruders, among whom 115 were Indians and 93 were Bangladeshis, were also detained.
Amid a rise in illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, held a meeting on Thursday with top officers of the Border Security Force (BSF). He instructed them to maintain a strict vigil along the border and to take firm action against those facilitating the infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals into Indian territory.
