The Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir is facing an internal crisis, with 25 reportedly disgruntled National Conference (NC) MLAs giving the party leadership a 14-day ultimatum to address their demands. The legislators have threatened to withdraw their support if the leadership fails to act within the deadline.
The rebel faction has demanded a complete overhaul of the government, including the removal of all existing ministers from their portfolios and the immediate removal of the Chief Minister's Advisor.
According to sources, the MLAs have warned that they will approach Raj Bhavan and formally withdraw their legislative support if the party high command fails to meet their demands. India Today has accessed a copy of the letter sent by the rebel legislators, which outlines their demands and warns of the consequences of inaction.
The document carries signatures of 16 MLAs who have formally endorsed the resolution. According to key coordinators within the rebel camp, another nine legislators support the move but could not sign the letter as they were out of station attending to personal matters.
Meanwhile, highly placed sources in the NC said the party high command has assigned key confidants to contact the rebel MLAs individually. The emissaries are trying to find common ground and resolve the crisis before it affects the government's stability.
The dissident legislators have demanded that the party remove all current ministers from their portfolios within 14 days. They have also called for the immediate removal of the Chief Minister's Advisor.
The rebels want the party to form an entirely new council of ministers through a transparent, merit-based process. They have also demanded consultations with the entire legislative party before making ministerial appointments, instead of allowing a select group to control the decisions.
The MLAs have raised concerns over the party's ideological commitments and election manifesto. They want the government to push strongly for the restoration of Article 370, Article 35A and other related constitutional safeguards. They have opposed what they see as compromises on these issues and want the government to raise the demands firmly with the BJP-led Centre.
The rebel faction has warned that it will approach Raj Bhavan to withdraw legislative support if the leadership fails to take concrete action within the 14-day deadline.
The reported rebellion comes as Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has announced plans to resign from both the National Conference and his Lok Sabha seat on November 3.
Ruhullah has accused the party leadership of diluting its ideological commitments and moving away from the mandate it secured on the promise of challenging the constitutional changes introduced on August 5, 2019.
The National Conference has 41 MLAs in the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. If 25 legislators withdraw their support, the government would lose its operational majority, putting its survival at risk despite backing from independent legislators and external allies.
