The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed a major political upheaval as Speaker U T Khader suspended 18 BJP MLAs for creating a ruckus during the House proceedings. The suspension came after the legislators stormed the well of the Assembly, attempted to climb the Speaker’s podium, and disrupted discussions over the state budget and honey-trapping allegations.
Following the Speaker’s decision, marshals physically escorted the suspended MLAs out of the House. The suspension was enforced under Rule 388 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, which allows disciplinary action against members who repeatedly obstruct proceedings or defy the authority of the Chair.
Political Tensions Rise Over Budget and Allegations
The BJP’s protest escalated after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded to the state budget, which the Opposition has dubbed the “Halal Budget” due to allocations favouring the Muslim community. The situation intensified further when BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal raised concerns about an alleged honey-trapping network targeting legislators.
During the session, Karnataka Cooperation Minister K N Rajanna made a startling revelation, claiming that 48 MLAs had been victims of honey-trapping, including himself. "There was an attempt to trap me as well," Rajanna admitted while addressing the Assembly. His statement followed Yatnal’s claims that organised gangs were deliberately targeting Congress ministers.
Government Orders High-Level Investigation
As tensions mounted, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced a high-level investigation into the honey-trapping allegations. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also assured lawmakers that the government would take the matter seriously and conduct a thorough probe.
The controversy surfaced shortly after Karnataka Police arrested two women, aged 23 and 27, in Tumakuru district, on charges of honey-trapping a BJP leader. The incident has further fuelled political unrest, with the Opposition demanding a comprehensive investigation into the alleged network behind these activities.
Political Fallout and Ongoing Investigation
The suspension of BJP MLAs has deepened political fault lines in Karnataka, with the Opposition accusing the ruling government of ignoring critical issues and targeting dissenting voices. Meanwhile, the government remains firm in its stance, stating that disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in the Assembly.
As the investigation progressed, the allegations continued to stir debate within the state’s political circles, raising concerns about security, blackmail and the influence of organised criminal networks in Karnataka’s political landscape.
