15 Indian fishermen freed from Sri Lankan prison return to Chennai

On Thursday morning, 15 Indian fishermen who had been in a Sri Lankan prison were released and arrived at Chennai airport. They were arrested for allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters. Officials from the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department were there to greet them at the airport and send them back to their hometowns.
The Sri Lankan Navy detained eight fishermen on September 27, 2024, as they were fishing close to Mannar Island, allegedly engaging in cross-border fishing, according to the fisheries department. They were taken to Sri Lankan courts and put in jail. Similarly, on November 11, 2024, the Sri Lankan Navy detained and imprisoned a group of 12 fishermen from Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam area on suspicion of engaging in cross-border fishing. Following the intervention of the Union and state governments, 15 fishermen were freed from Sri Lankan jails. Among them, three fishermen are from Rameshwaram, and 12 are from Nagapattinam.
According to an official statement, on January 5, the Indian Coast Guard and the Bangladesh Coast Guard organised a reciprocal fisherman's exchange. ICG Ship Varad and Amrit Kaur successfully returned 95 fishermen and four Indian fishing boats while turning over 90 Bangladeshi fishermen, including 12 who had been rescued from the sunken fishing boat "Kaushik." Following their return from Bangladesh, the Indian fishermen were turned over to the West Bengal State Fisheries authorities at South 24 Parganas.
In recent months, several Indian fishermen have been arrested by Bangladesh authorities for accidentally crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and entering Bangladesh waters. Similarly, several Bangladesh fishermen have also been caught by Indian authorities in the same situation, according to an official statement.
