In a continuation of their impressive achievements, 146 Indian students, comprising 75 women and 71 men, have been granted Erasmus Mundus scholarships for the 2024 academic year. These scholarships will support their pursuit of a two-year Masters programme in Europe, solidifying India's position as one of the leading recipients of this prestigious scholarship.
According to the Delegation of the European Union to India and Bhutan, this year, 2603 students from 137 countries worldwide have received scholarships for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree programme. This programme offers a study curriculum collaboratively administered by an international consortium of higher education institutions.
In 2024, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Programme celebrates its 20th anniversary, highlighting its significant impact on students, higher education institutions, and countries outside the European Union.
According to the statement, India has been the primary beneficiary of the programme, with over 2000 students receiving the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship since its inception in 2004. Since the programme opened to international students in the same year, more than 6,000 Erasmus+ short- and long-term scholarships have been awarded to Indian students.
This has enabled access to advanced education and research facilities, international exposure, and valuable professional networks, thereby expanding professional opportunities for recipients.
The Delegation of the European Union to India hosted an event honouring the grantees, marking the increasing people-to-people connections and mobility between the EU and India. The scholars are preparing to commence their international degree programme in Europe from September onwards.
The selected students will study and conduct research at a minimum of two universities across different European countries, earning joint or double degrees in fields including sustainability, pharmaceuticals, engineering, quantum science, data science, and various STEM and social science disciplines. The fully funded scholarship covers tuition fees, travel expenses, and living allowances for the recipients.
Herve Delphin, Ambassador of the European Union to India, congratulated the winners, highlighting that over 80,000 Indian students are currently studying in Europe. This reflects a growing appreciation for the continent's diverse academic offerings, rich cultural heritage, and extensive opportunities for personal and professional development.
He noted that India has consistently been among the top recipients of Erasmus+ scholarships, underscoring the high calibre of Indian students despite the competitiveness of the scholarships.
Delphin expressed confidence that this experience will be transformative for the recipients as they embark on a unique educational journey in EU countries, where they will also serve as ambassadors for the EU-India partnership. He wished them every success in their endeavours.
The event brought together Indian students, Erasmus and Research Alumni, and representatives from EU Member States including the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium. It served as an interactive platform for sharing information on travelling, living, and studying in Europe.
Erasmus, which stands for European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, is a programme established by the European Union in 1987. Its purpose is to support global education for students and foster partnerships between universities and countries.
