The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on 27th August reached the majority mark in Rajya Sabha after nine BJP leaders and two members from the allies were elected unopposed in the bypolls for the upper house. From the BJP, Mission Ranjan Das and Rameshwar Teli were elected to Rajya Sabha from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Choudhary from Haryana, Union Minister George Kurian from Madhya Pradesh, Dhairyasheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan, and Rajeev Bhattacharjee from Tripura.
Among the NDA allies, Nitin Patil from the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP won a seat, and Upendra Kushwaha, President of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, was elected unopposed from Bihar.
Senior Congress leader and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was also elected to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana, increasing the Opposition's INDIA bloc representation in the Upper House to 85 members.
With the latest bypoll results, the BJP's tally in the Rajya Sabha has risen to 96 members, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) now holds 112 seats.
Currently, the Rajya Sabha has eight vacant seats- four from Jammu and Kashmir and four reserved for nominated members. This leaves the majority threshold in the 245-member house at 119.
Achieving a majority in the Rajya Sabha, a goal the NDA has pursued for a decade will lessen its reliance on parties such as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), YSR Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and AIADMK for passing essential legislation.
Conversely, the Congress will maintain the Leader of the Opposition position in the Rajya Sabha, with its numbers rising to 27 members—two more than the 25 required to hold this position.
