India's UN Ambassador, Ruchira Kamboj reiterated India's longstanding stance on the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Emphasizing the failure of the current UNSC structure, Kamboj highlighted its inability to adequately represent and accommodate the emerging powers in the global arena.
India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, made a notable statement during a Roundtable on Security Council Reform held at the UN headquarters on Thursday, “The current composition of the Security Council no longer aligns with the realities of our interconnected and multi-polar world.”
She added, “The Council structure, designed in a different era, does not reflect the rise of new powers, the shifting geopolitical landscape and the aspirations of nations striving for a fairer and more equitable global order.”
A roundtable discussion titled "Shifting the Balance: Perspectives on United Nations Security Council Reforms from Global South Think Tanks" took place, gathering envoys and policy experts. The initiative for this discussion was led by the Permanent Missions of Brazil, India, South Africa, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
In light of the evolving dynamics of the global order, Kamboj emphasized the pressing need for timely reforms to the Security Council. She stated, “It’s time to embrace change, recognise emerging powers and foster a more inclusive and effective global order. With more voices at the table, decision-making will be enriched.”
Kamboj underlined the importance of granting membership to emerging economies and regions in recognition of their increasing political influence within the context of a multi-polar world. “It is not just a matter of fairness but a ‘pragmatic necessity’,” she further added.
The Indian Ambassador stated that the changes to the council membership will “enable us to pool resources, expertise and perspectives from a wider range of countries, empowering us to confront these issues with greater effectiveness and unity.”
Kamboj highlighted that 73 heads of state have endorsed UNSC reforms at the UN General Assembly, urging member states to promptly act and implement the necessary reforms. She called for the expansion of the council to make the UN decision-making “more inclusive, representative and responsive to the needs and aspirations of all nations.”
Kamboj reiterated India's steadfast stance on UNSC reforms, emphasizing the current UNSC structure's failure to adequately represent emerging powers on the global stage.
