A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest point since he returned to office. According to the survey, just 42% of Americans approve of how he’s managing the administration. That’s a subtle drop from 43% three weeks ago and a noticeable decline from 47% shortly after his inauguration on January 20. Poll results suggest that more Americans are growing uneasy with what they see as Trump overstepping his authority. In the early days of his term, he signed a series of executive orders aimed at tightening control, not just over government departments, but also places like universities. These moves have left many feeling that he’s pushing past his limits.
Even though Trump’s approval ratings are still higher than much of what President Obama saw during his time in office, the latest figures show rising concern about Trump’s recent actions.
The survey found that most Americans believe the president should follow federal court rulings, even if he disagrees with them. Around 83% of the 4,306 respondents said Trump should respect the law. It also revealed that 57% of those surveyed, including about a third of Republicans, are against the idea of the president cutting off funds to universities just because he disapproves of how they are run.
Trump has argued that colleges aren’t doing enough to stop antisemitism, but most Americans don’t think that justifies pulling their funding. Around 66% of those surveyed said the president shouldn’t have control over major institutions.
The poll also reveals widespread dissatisfaction with how Trump is dealing with several major issues, including immigration, inflation, taxes, and upholding the rule of law. Even on immigration, typically one of his stronger points, more people disliked(46%) than supported (45%).
