Government data indicates a notable decline in violence attributed to Left Wing Extremism due to India's three-dimensional approach.
According to the data, violence cases have decreased by 52 percent, with fatalities declining by 69 percent from 6,035 to 1,868 during the period from 2014 to 2023 compared to 2004 to 2014. Additionally, a total of 195 new camps have been established in the Red Zone.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has assigned cases to the National Investigation Agency for thorough investigation. Special task forces, equipped with offensive strategies and air support, have been formed to conduct effective operations.
Following extensive deliberations and consultations with the relevant state governments to address the long-standing issue of left-wing extremism, it was determined that an integrated approach targeting the most affected areas would yield positive outcomes.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has conducted a thorough analysis of the spread and patterns of Left Wing Extremist violence. As a result, 70 districts across 10 states have been identified for special focus in terms of planning, implementation, and monitoring of various interventions, according to an official statement from the MHA.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, incidents of Left Wing Extremism have decreased significantly. LWE incidents dropped from 14,862 to 7,128, with security force fatalities down by 72% and civilian deaths by 68%. The number of districts experiencing violence reduced by 53%, from 96 in 2010 to 45 in 2022, while police stations reporting violence decreased from 465 to 176.
The Union government closely monitors the situation and supplements and coordinates efforts in several ways. These include providing the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs); sanctioning India Reserve (IR) battalions; setting up Counter Insurgency and Anti-Terrorism (CIAT) schools; modernizing and upgrading the State Police and their Intelligence apparatus; reimbursing security-related expenditure under the Security-related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme; providing helicopters for anti-LWE operations; assisting in training State Police through the Ministry of Defence, the Central Police Organizations, and the Bureau of Police Research and Development; sharing intelligence; facilitating inter-State coordination; and supporting community policing and civic action programs.
