As US President Donald Trump escalates tensions with BRICS, threatening the group with 100% tariffs for challenging the dollar’s dominance, India reaffirms its role as a founding member. India also emphasises its efforts to enhance understanding of BRICS operations within the “international community.” External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly defended BRICS in Parliament, stressing that the group addresses shared concerns among its members and strives to make global leadership and discussions more inclusive and representative.
Responding to a written question in Lok Sabha about Trump’s tariff threat, Jaishankar said, “BRICS is a platform that has grown in membership and agenda over the last two decades. It is our endeavour to enhance understanding of BRICS activities among the international community.”
India has clarified its stance on the Trump-BRICS de-dollarisation debate, asserting that it is not involved in any efforts to weaken the U.S. dollar or create a unified BRICS currency. As External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has previously stated, challenging the dollar is not a priority in India’s economic, political, or strategic agenda. India has consistently conveyed this position to U.S. officials during bilateral discussions.
“Understandably, as nations at different levels of development and income, and bearing in mind their individual national interests, BRICS members have a range of positions on contemporary issues,” the minister stated while responding to questions about Trump's threats and the opinions of the members.
Jaishankar stated that BRICS meetings and discussions aim to find common ground and work together to shape the global order, with a shared commitment to multipolarity as a key unifying factor. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed last month that BRICS, which includes 11 member states and nine partner countries, has been "dead" ever since he issued his 100% tariff threat.
