As of January 2024-25, renewable energy contributed 22.49% of the country’s total electricity generation, according to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This information was shared with the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesho Naik, provided this update in a written response to questions from CPI MP V Sivadasan.
On February 11, Naik reiterated that, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment at COP26, the ministry is working towards reaching 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030. It is important to note that generation refers to the actual electricity produced over time, while capacity represents the maximum electricity that can be generated.
Over the past nine years, the share of renewable energy in India's total power generation has grown from 17.28% in 2014-15 to 20.75% in 2023-24, as per the Renewable Energy Statistics Report 2023-24. The report also notes that in 2022-23, renewable sources contributed 22.61% of the country’s electricity production. In August 2022, under its updated nationally determined contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement, India set a target to cut the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030. It also aims to expand the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy to 50% (500GW) of its total installed power capacity by 2030. However, India has yet to revise its NDC targets for the 2035 period.
On Tuesday, Naik addressed questions regarding the growth of solar power capacity and manufacturing. Responding to BJP MP Jaggesh, he stated that India’s solar power capacity has enormously expanded over the past decade, increasing from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.
“India has also made significant strides in solar manufacturing. In 2014, the country had a limited solar module manufacturing capacity of just around 2 GW. Over the past decade, this has surged to 67 GW, as enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers,” he expressed.
